Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Morning on the Seine near Giverny (1897) is one of a celebrated series of over twenty oil paintings in which Claude Monet captured the hushed, mist-laden atmosphere of the Seine River at dawn, near his home at Giverny. Working from a boat converted into a floating studio, Monet rose before dawn to observe the transient effects of early morning light on the water, rendering the mirrored reflections of trees and sky in a cool blue and purple palette that dissolves solid form into shimmering sensation. The series exemplifies Monet's mature Impressionist method of systematically exploring a single motif under changing atmospheric conditions — an approach he had refined through earlier series such as the Haystacks and Rouen Cathedral. Fifteen to eighteen works from the Mornings on the Seine series were exhibited at the Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, in June 1898, earning critical recognition as among the most subtle and poetic of his serial compositions.
