Red Sunset on the Dnieper

Arkhip Kuindzhi

Oil on canvas

Metropolitan Museum of Art

This monumental oil painting captures an intensely blazing sunset over the banks of the Dnieper River in Ukraine, with silhouetted thatched-roof village huts anchoring the darkened foreground against a sky ablaze in fiery reds and oranges. Hallmarks of Kuindzhi's signature style are everywhere: a low horizon line, a centrally positioned light source, and a masterful use of aerial perspective that makes the luminous sky feel almost supernaturally vivid. Arkhip Kuindzhi (1841–1910) was a Ukrainian-born painter of Crimean Greek descent who rose from orphaned poverty — working as a goose-herder and laborer as a child — to become one of the most celebrated landscape painters of Imperial Russia and a pioneer of Russian Luminism. Hanging in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this large-scale, more-than-six-feet-wide canvas is considered one of his late masterworks and a defining example of how color alone can evoke the transcendent power of nature.
