The Birth of the Virgin - Fra Carnevale (c. 1467)

Fra Carnevale (Bartolomeo di Giovanni Corradini)

Tempera and oil on panel

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Set within a soaring Renaissance palace of pale marble and rhythmic arches, this panel transforms a sacred narrative into a stage for Fra Carnevale's obsession with perspective and architecture. Elegant women in flowing blue and white robes gather around the newborn Virgin Mary, their graceful poses echoing the classical reliefs and columns that frame the scene. Fra Carnevale, a pupil of Fra Angelico and collaborator with the architect-theorist Leon Battista Alberti, used the sacred subject almost as a pretext to explore idealized Renaissance urban space and linear perspective. This luminous, architecturally dazzling panel brings the intellectual energy of the early Italian Renaissance into any room.
