An Old Lady with a Book

Rembrandt van Rijn

Oil on canvas

National Gallery of Art

This imposing portrait depicts an elderly woman seated in a wooden chair, shown from the knees up against a dark brown background. She wears a black mourning dress with white cuffs and a wide starched ruff collar, and holds a closed Bible in her lap while gently touching its clasp, her spectacles held between the fingers of the other hand. Rather than engaging the viewer with her gaze, she appears absorbed in private contemplation—an unusual and psychologically rich conceit that reflects Rembrandt's sustained interest in pushing the boundaries of portraiture during the late 1630s. Born in Leiden in 1606, Rembrandt van Rijn became the leading painter of Amsterdam's Golden Age, renowned for his mastery of light, shadow, and the rendering of interior emotional states through meticulous observation of the human face.
