Across Country (A travers champs)

Édouard Vuillard

Color lithograph on China paper

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Across Country (À travers champs) is a color lithograph on China paper created by the French Post-Impressionist and Nabi artist Édouard Vuillard (1868–1940) between 1897 and 1898, published in 1899 as part of his celebrated album Paysages et intérieurs (Landscapes and Interiors). The print depicts an open rural landscape rendered in Vuillard's characteristic flattened, decorative style, in which forms dissolve into patterns of color and line influenced by Japanese printmaking. Vuillard, a founding member of the Nabis group, transformed fleeting observations from everyday life into bold, intimate compositions that challenged academic conventions. The album, commissioned and published by art dealer Ambroise Vollard in an edition of one hundred, was printed by master printer Auguste Clot and stands as one of the landmarks of late nineteenth-century printmaking.
