Standing Young Man at the Window in his Study Reading ("The Student")

Willem Drost

Oil on canvas

Statens Museum for Kunst

This painting by Dutch Golden Age artist Willem Drost depicts a young man standing at a window in his study, absorbed in reading, with light filtering into the intimate interior space. Drost, baptized in Amsterdam in 1633, was a pupil of Rembrandt and is regarded as one of his most gifted disciples, closely emulating his master's use of chiaroscuro and psychological depth. The composition reflects the Dutch 17th-century tradition of genre painting, combining careful observation of light with a quietly contemplative mood. The work is held in the collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark) and exemplifies the rare, small body of paintings securely attributed to Drost.
