The Dining Room, Vernonnet

Pierre Bonnard

Oil on canvas

Minneapolis Institute of Art

In this richly colored interior, Bonnard depicts the dining room of his country house 'Ma Roulotte' in the village of Vernonnet, a property he purchased in 1912 on the Seine northwest of Paris. The composition is characteristic of his mature Intimist style: warm, vibrating hues animate everyday domestic objects and figures, collapsing the boundary between interior and exterior space. Bonnard was a founding member of the Post-Impressionist group Les Nabis and later became one of the foremost colorists of the twentieth century, celebrated for his ability to translate light and atmosphere through bold, expressive color. The painting belongs to a series of dining room subjects Bonnard explored across several years, reflecting his sustained interest in the intimate rhythms of domestic life at Vernonnet.
