The Fishing Boat
Gustave Courbet
Oil on canvas
Metropolitan Museum of Art
A weathered sailboat rests heavily on a sandy shore, its tall mast and furled canvas sails catching the soft glow of a dusky sky streaked with pink and violet clouds. Courbet, the great champion of French Realism, paints the scene with his characteristic thick, tactile brushwork, building up the rocky foreshore and churning sea with a palette knife to give the whole composition a sense of weight and texture. This is a work from his later years at Étretat on the Normandy coast, where he turned away from grand historical subjects to find monumentality in humble, everyday scenes of sea and shore. The quiet stillness of the beached vessel against the restless ocean beyond gives the painting a contemplative, almost melancholic calm that rewards long, slow looking.
