Iceberg

Albert Bierstadt

Oil on canvas

Carnegie Museum of Art

This panoramic oil painting depicts a massive iceberg dominating the composition, surrounded by a blue-gray expanse of open sea and sky, with a smaller iceberg visible on the distant horizon. Bierstadt rendered the translucent qualities and subtle tonal variations of ice with careful attention to light and atmosphere, consistent with the Luminist tradition he helped define. Born in Solingen, Germany in 1830 and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Bierstadt studied at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie before becoming one of the foremost painters of the American West and a leading figure of the Hudson River School. His iceberg paintings, produced in connection with transatlantic voyages in the 1880s, represent a significant expansion of his subject matter beyond the western American landscape, demonstrating his sustained engagement with the Romantic tradition of the sublime in nature.
