The Gulf Stream

Winslow Homer

Oil on canvas

Metropolitan Museum of Art

This powerful masterpiece by renowned American Realist painter Winslow Homer depicts a Black man adrift on a dismasted, rudderless fishing boat in treacherous Caribbean waters, surrounded by menacing sharks and a distant waterspout. Homer (1836-1910), considered one of America's greatest artists, was fascinated by the sea's power and spent his final years on the Maine coast, while making numerous winter trips to the Bahamas that inspired this haunting meditation on human vulnerability against nature's indifferent forces. The painting brilliantly combines Homer's technical mastery with profound themes of survival, isolation, and resilience, while also reflecting on the complex social issues of post-Civil War America including the legacy of slavery and human endurance in the face of overwhelming odds.
