Le Nouveau-Né

Georges de La Tour

Oil on canvas

Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes

Le Nouveau-Né (The Newborn) is an intimate nocturnal painting by the French Baroque master Georges de La Tour (1593–1652), depicting three figures — now identified as the Virgin Mary holding the swaddled Christ Child, and Saint Anne shielding a candle flame — set against a deep, neutral black background. The sole light source is a hidden candle, its flame masked by an older woman's cupped hand, casting warm chiaroscuro illumination across softly rounded forms rendered with geometric austerity and quiet naturalism. La Tour, who spent his career in the Duchy of Lorraine and was deeply influenced by the Caravaggesque tradition, brought to this composition a meditative stillness and formal simplicity that set him apart from his contemporaries. Long forgotten after his death and misattributed to other painters, La Tour was rediscovered in the early 20th century, and Le Nouveau-Né was among the first works correctly attributed to him, cementing his modern reputation as one of the great masters of French painting.
