The Harvest (La Moisson)

Vincent van Gogh

Oil on canvas

Van Gogh Museum

Painted in June 1888 near Arles in southern France, The Harvest (La Moisson) presents a sweeping panoramic view of the plain of La Crau, with a half-mowed wheatfield, ladders, carts, and a solitary reaper visible in the background beneath a vivid azure sky. Van Gogh combined warm golden-yellow tones of ripened wheat with the cool blue of the sky, deploying varied brushwork in the foreground and more uniform color patches in the distance to create a convincing sense of depth and atmospheric heat. A Dutch Post-Impressionist painter working at the height of his Arles period, van Gogh was deeply inspired by the intense southern light and the agricultural rhythms of Provençal life, themes that recur throughout his oeuvre. The painting stands as one of the most celebrated works from his extraordinarily productive time in Arles, during which he completed numerous paintings and drawings in rapid succession.
