Place Pigalle at Night
Pierre Bonnard
Oil on panel
Minneapolis Institute of Art
Place Pigalle at Night depicts the famous Parisian square and its surrounding streets bathed in the atmospheric light of evening, rendered in Bonnard's characteristically bold, color-saturated style on panel. As a founding member of Les Nabis and a Post-Impressionist of the first rank, Bonnard brought to urban subjects the same decorative sensibility and chromatic intensity that distinguished his domestic interiors and landscapes. The work belongs to a period of heightened activity in which Bonnard was producing both figural and urban compositions while exhibiting regularly at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery. Executed in oil on panel, the painting exemplifies his ability to transform a familiar Parisian locale into a richly patterned, emotionally resonant scene that transcends mere topographical record.
