The School of Athens

Raphael

Fresco

Apostolic Palace, Vatican City

The School of Athens (Scuola di Atene) is a monumental fresco painted by Raphael between 1509 and 1511 on the walls of the Stanza della Segnatura in the Apostolic Palace, Vatican City, as part of a commission from Pope Julius II. The composition depicts a grand assembly of ancient philosophers, mathematicians, and scientists gathered beneath soaring barrel-vaulted arches, with Plato and Aristotle commanding the center — Plato pointing heavenward and Aristotle gesturing toward the earth, their gestures encapsulating their contrasting philosophical outlooks. Executed in the High Renaissance style, the fresco demonstrates Raphael's masterful command of linear perspective, harmonious figure groupings, and the integration of classical and contemporary humanist ideals, with identifiable likenesses of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Bramante, and Raphael himself woven among the ancient figures. Universally regarded as one of the supreme achievements of Western art, it has been described as Raphael's masterpiece and "the perfect embodiment of the classical spirit of the Renaissance."
