Tableau I
Piet Mondrian
Oil on canvas
Gemeentemuseum Den Haag
Tableau I is a landmark oil painting by Piet Mondrian, dated 1921, in which the canvas is structured by bold black horizontal and vertical lines that define rectangular fields filled with primary colors — red, yellow, and blue — set against white grounds. The composition exemplifies Mondrian's mature Neoplastic language, in which all reference to the natural world is entirely eliminated in favor of pure geometric relationships and primary color. Born in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, in 1872, Mondrian co-founded the De Stijl movement with Theo van Doesburg in 1917 and developed Neoplasticism as a philosophical and aesthetic system aimed at expressing universal harmony through the most reduced pictorial means. Tableau I stands as one of the defining achievements of this period, representing Mondrian's belief that art, freed from representation, could embody absolute and spiritual truths.
