Sorrowing Old Man (At Eternity's Gate) is an oil painting completed by Vincent van Gogh in May 1890 at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. The work depicts an elderly man seated on a simple chair, his elbows resting on his knees and his head buried in his hands, conveying profound grief and isolation against a subdued interior background. Van Gogh painted it as a reinterpretation of his own 1882 lithograph of the same subject, itself derived from a pencil drawing of an almshouse pensioner he had studied in The Hague. Executed with expressive brushwork and a palette of muted blues, greens, and earth tones, it stands as one of the most emotionally concentrated works of his final period, painted just two months before his death.
