In this intimate winter landscape, Camille Pissarro depicts the snow-blanketed trees and houses of Louveciennes, the village west of Paris where he had settled with his family. Working with a restrained palette of whites, browns, blues, and grays, he captured the hushed atmosphere of a cold winter day, with only the footsteps of a solitary figure beneath a screen of bare trees animating the quiet scene. Painted around 1870, the work exemplifies the emerging Impressionist commitment to direct observation of nature and the transient effects of light and weather. Pissarro's Louveciennes period—cut short when Prussian forces occupied the region during the Franco-Prussian War—produced some of the most concentrated and accomplished landscape paintings of his early career.
