This watercolor vignette by J.M.W. Turner depicts a distant harbour view of Genoa, showing the city's coastline with a ship putting out to sea. Turner first visited Genoa during his 1828 Italian tour, recording the Ligurian coast in his sketchbooks and describing the coastline as 'remarkably rugged and fine.' The composition was created as a finished illustration for the engraved edition of the Life and Works of Lord Byron, published in 1833 with an engraving by Edward Finden, and may evoke Byron's final departure from Italy before his fatal Greek campaign of 1823. Turner, the foremost English Romantic landscape painter, was celebrated for his luminous atmospheric effects and his ability to imbue topographical subjects with poetic and emotional resonance.
