Wheat Field with Sheaves

Vincent van Gogh

Oil on canvas

Kröller-Müller Museum

Painted in June 1888 during Van Gogh's intensely productive period in Arles, southern France, this oil on canvas belongs to a celebrated series of ten 'Harvest' paintings completed in just over a week. The composition is structured in distinct horizontal bands, drawing the eye from sheaves of harvested wheat in the foreground through rows of golden fields to a horizon of trees and houses beneath a contrasting blue sky. Van Gogh worked en plein air, directly under the blazing Provençal sun, and his characteristic multidirectional impasto brushstrokes animate the surface with a palpable energy. The wheat field motif held deep personal and spiritual significance for the artist, who saw in the cycles of sowing and harvest a metaphor for human life and the dignity of manual labor.
