The Arrival in Bethlehem

Master of the Brussels Calling of Saint Matthew

Oil on wood panel

Metropolitan Museum of Art

This sweeping Netherlandish panoramic landscape unfolds in layered blues and golds, with the small figures of Mary and Joseph arriving at Bethlehem tucked into the foreground amid a vast fantastical terrain of winding rivers, fortified towns, and craggy mountain peaks. The anonymous Flemish master, named after a related panel in Brussels, worked in the early sixteenth-century tradition of world-landscape painting, where biblical narrative becomes almost secondary to the imaginative, bird's-eye vision of nature and architecture stretching to a hazy horizon. Painted with the fine detail and jewel-toned palette typical of Antwerp Mannerist landscapists, the work rewards close viewing, revealing tiny travelers, boats, and turreted castles scattered throughout the composition. It's a captivating choice for a home display, offering an endlessly explorable vista that feels both meditative and richly storied.
