Dr. Pozzi at Home
John Singer Sargent
Oil on canvas
Armand Hammer Museum of Art
Dr. Pozzi at Home is a full-length oil portrait depicting Samuel Jean de Pozzi, a prominent French gynaecologist and art collector, standing informally dressed in a voluminous scarlet robe de chambre tied with a red cord at the waist. The composition deliberately departs from the sombre conventions of academic medical portraiture, presenting the subject with an almost theatrical sensuality that recalls Renaissance portraits of Catholic popes and cardinals. Painted when Sargent was approximately 25 years old, the work showcases his already formidable technical command — fluid brushwork, bold colour, and acute psychological presence — that would define his celebrated career. The painting marked a significant milestone as Sargent's first large-scale male portrait and the first of his works to be exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.
