Stormy Sea Breaking on a Shore

J. M. W. Turner

Oil on canvas

Yale Center for British Art

Stormy Sea Breaking on a Shore is a late oil sketch by the British master Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851), executed between approximately 1840 and 1845. Using rapid, gestural brushstrokes and a restrained palette, Turner conveys the raw kinetic force of crashing waves and wind-driven spray along a shoreline, with light breaking through turbulent clouds. The work exemplifies Turner's late manner—prioritizing atmospheric sensation over topographical precision—and places him as a pivotal forerunner of Impressionism and abstract painting. Held in the Yale Center for British Art as part of the Paul Mellon Collection, this small but powerful canvas stands among the finest examples of his mature marine subjects.
