A Walk at Dusk

Caspar David Friedrich

Oil on canvas

J. Paul Getty Museum

A Walk at Dusk depicts a solitary male figure, head bowed, walking alone beneath a waxing moon on a cold winter's night, pausing to contemplate a megalithic tomb whose ancient stones evoke mortality and the passage of time. Leafless trees frame the scene like specters, while a grove of evergreen oaks rises through the mist in the distance, offering a counterpoint of life and hope. Friedrich, a central figure of German Romanticism, wove Christian symbolism into the cycles of nature: the moon, the dormant landscape, and the ancient tomb together articulate themes of death, faith, and rebirth. Painted in the final years before a debilitating stroke ended his active career, the work stands as one of his most personally resonant and symbolically layered compositions.
