Study of Three Parrot Tulips
Attributed to John Constable
Oil on paper laid on canvas
Victoria and Albert Museum
Attributed to the eminent British landscape painter John Constable (1776–1837), this intimate oil study depicts three parrot tulips rendered with close observational precision on paper laid on canvas. Parrot tulips, distinguished by their dramatically fringed, ruffled petals, are presented here with the directness and naturalistic freshness characteristic of Constable's working method, in which on-the-spot studies of natural specimens were integral to his artistic practice. Constable, best known for his revolutionary landscape paintings of the English countryside, produced numerous studies of individual natural forms—clouds, trees, and flowers—that demonstrate his commitment to the direct observation of nature. This small, concentrated work exemplifies his belief that no two natural forms are alike and that genuine art must be grounded in attentive looking.
