Narcissus

Caravaggio

Oil on canvas

Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Palazzo Barberini

This masterpiece by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio depicts the Greek mythological figure Narcissus, a beautiful youth who falls fatally in love with his own reflection. The composition is strikingly intimate—showing Narcissus leaning over dark water, his elegant brocade doublet and illuminated knee creating a circular, almost mirrored effect with his reflection below. Caravaggio's revolutionary use of tenebrism—extreme contrasts of light and shadow emerging from pitch-black backgrounds—gives the scene an intensely psychological, meditative quality that was groundbreaking for its time. The painting strips away all superfluous elements found in traditional depictions of the myth (no forests, flowers, or the character of Echo), reducing the scene to a body, a reflection, and a dark abyss—making it a profound meditation on vanity, illusion, and human self-absorption.
