Serhii Vasylkivsky was one of Ukraine's most celebrated artists of the 19th century. But before his rise to fame, he had to drop out of veterinary school and work as a civil servant just to survive.

He eventually made his way to Paris, where his talent shone so brightly that the prestigious Paris Salon allowed him to exhibit without jury approval. Though he is famous for painting the sweeping Ukrainian steppes, Sea Tide from 1898 is a rare and beautiful departure into maritime imagery.

Here, he captures fishing boats on the tranquil Black Sea coast with an incredible mastery of atmospheric light. Critics called his landscapes miniature pearls, and it is easy to see why.
