Winslow Homer did exactly that. By the late nineteenth century, one of America's greatest painters retreated to the rugged coast of Maine. He was so protective of his solitude that he would raise a flag when he wanted lunch delivered, refusing to let anyone interrupt his flow.

This intense isolation birthed Kissing the Moon. Painted near the end of his life, it shows three men in a boat completely swallowed by massive, haunting ocean swells. Homer refused to explain its meaning, telling his dealer only that viewers should keep their distance from it. Many believe the figures represent the artist and his brothers in a quiet meditation on mortality.

In our hyper-connected world, Homer's deep need for solitude and his respect for the overwhelming power of nature feel incredibly refreshing. It is a striking reminder of how small we are against the vastness of the sea.
