Did you know one of Degas's most profound masterpieces was actually painted in New Orleans?

During a five-month stay in America in 1872, Edgar Degas painted this incredibly intimate portrait of his sister-in-law, Estelle Musson. At the time of the sitting, she was tragically losing her eyesight and was nearly blind.

To reflect her fading vision, Degas used a subdued palette of soft whites, pale pinks, and grays. The beautifully blended, hazy brushwork intentionally mirrors her limited visual world. It is a deeply empathetic choice, especially since Degas himself was beginning to struggle with his own deteriorating eyesight.

In our fast-paced, visually overwhelming world, this quiet portrait invites us to pause. It reminds us of the power of empathy, stillness, and finding beauty in the quiet moments of introspection.
