Joaquin Sorolla was world-famous for his bright, sun-drenched Mediterranean beaches and joyful coastal scenes. But during his summer stays at San Sebastian in 1918, he captured something entirely different. The changing northern Cantabrian light inspired him to paint these moody, purplish storm clouds and crashing grey-green waves along the promenade.

Orphaned at age two and largely self-taught, Sorolla rose against all odds to become the most celebrated Spanish artist of his time. Tragically, just two years after completing this atmospheric seascape, he suffered a paralyzing stroke in his garden. He would never hold a paintbrush again, leaving his final canvas forever unfinished.
