The Vitreous Sanctum

Where prismatic light dissolves the weight of shadow into a sacred spectrum

To enter the Vitreous Sanctum is to first step through the threshold of the domestic. We begin with the Interior at Nice, where the sunlit French window invites the infinite into a mundane hotel room. This sense of enclosure is softened by Landscapes and Interiors: Interior with Pink Wallpaper, where the walls themselves seem to breathe. Yet, there is a pause, a stillness found In the Waiting Room, where time hangs suspended like dust motes in a beam of light. We meet the inhabitants of this sanctuary: the enigmatic Girl with a Pearl Earring gazes back with a luminous clarity that defies the centuries. Beside her, the elegance of high society takes form in Bildnis Sonja Knips and its counterpart Bildnis Sonja Knips (Portrait of Sonja Knips), where pink silk and dark backgrounds suggest a world transitioning from the physical to the ethereal. This transition becomes manifest in the ornate Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room, a space where craft becomes a totalizing environment, further echoed by the celestial cycles of Zodiaque and the theatrical grace of La Samaritaine. Outside, the natural world vibrates with an almost violent vitality. We see Vase with Three Sunflowers and the gleaming Imperial Fritillaries in a Copper Vase, flora that burns with inner heat. Beneath a moonlit canopy, The Snake Charmer whispers to the wild, while the sky itself dissolves into the pulsing luminescence of Starry Night Over the Rhône. However, the sanctum also holds the weight of the human spirit. We encounter The Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, where divine suffering is etched in light. This existential dread erupts in The Scream, and we are reminded of our fragile frame by the Head of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette. To find peace, we must strip away the figurative. We move into the structured purity of Tableau No. and the balanced geometry of Composition Blue, Red, Yellow, Black. In the tension of Composition No. 1 with Grey and Red 1938 / Composition with Red 1939, we see the world reduced to its essential truths. The palette softens in Gris (Gray) and sharpens in Pointed Black, leading us into the lithographic dance of Violett. Finally, we reach the heart of the spectrum. The jagged energy of Improvisation Gorge and the structural weight of Picture with a Black Arch prepare us for the ascent. We climb the Blue Mountain (Der blaue Berg) and gaze upon its twin, the other Blue Mountain (Der blaue Berg), symbols of the spiritual journey. We are anchored by the Tableau à la tache rouge (Bild mit rotem Fleck) before being swept into the cosmic dance of Several Circles (Einige Kreise). In this late stage of vision, we navigate the Complexité simple (Simple Complexity) of existence, arriving at the ultimate synthesis of Jaune Rouge Bleu, where light finally dissolves all shadow into the sacred.
